Cancer Research UK now manages and supports CancerHelp UK and is responsible for developing and maintaining our clinical trials database. You can ring the Cancer Research UK information nurses if you want to talk about clinical trials generally, or discuss any specific trial on our database.
Cancer Research UK was formed in February 2002 from the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and The Imperial Cancer Research Fund. It is the foremost cancer charity in the UK and the largest cancer research organisation in the world, outside the USA.
It funds doctors and scientists in hospitals, medical schools, universities and research institutes across the UK. Cancer Research UK is the European leader in the development of new anti-cancer drugs. It funds research on all aspects of the disease from its causes to treatment and prevention, education and psychological support for patients.
The Drug Development Office at Cancer Research UK develops and assesses new treatments for patients with cancer.
Experimental Cancer Medicines Centre (ECMC) Network
The ECMC network is a joint project between Cancer Research UK and the Departments of Health in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. It is a network of 19 centres across the UK that are all involved with phase 1 clinical trials of experimental treatments.
The aim is to bring together laboratory and patient based research of new drugs and tests across the country. It is building on the work done by the National Translational Cancer Research Network (NTRAC), which ran from 2001 to 2006. The funding of the ECMC network starts in April 2007, and will run for 5 years.
