Type of trialThere are different types of trials. Trials can look into treatments, preventing cancer or controlling symptoms for example. Cancer typeCancers are named according to where they started in the body. So a cancer that develops from breast cells is a breast cancer. This is called the primary cancer. If a biopsy from the liver or lung contains cancerous breast cells, then it is still a breast cancer. The breast cancer has spread to the liver or lungs (where it is called the secondary cancer). Cancer stageThe size of a cancer and how far it has spread. Used to decide on the best course of treatment. There can be any number of stages, but for most cancers there are about four. Stage one is the smallest cancer and stage four (or the highest number) means the cancer has spread away from where it started to another part of the body. Phase of trialWhich stage of the research process this trial is. (There are three stages of research in clinical trials - phase 1, 2 and 3 trials.) Type of treatmentThe cancer treatment the trial is testing, for example, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy etc. Location of trialMany trials are national or international. So they are run from many different centres (hospitals) around the country. Many are run from so many different centres that we cannot list them all. If you leave this field on 'please choose', the database will select all the trials that come into your search, wherever they are being run in the UK. But some trials (usually phase 1 or 2 trials) are local and you may want to try to find a trial in your part of the country. |
